In 1971, how much Chevy would $1545 buy?

If they had had the right kind of accident while filming that spot, the Pinto's delivery to the market might have been delayed a bit.

Celicas and Cutlasses. That's what everybody drove when I was in high school. That's because they were the cheap wheels of the day.

I never owned a Datsun, but I sure rode in several in the day, and I was positive that the word meant "no rear legroom" in Japanese.

Sakes alive!

Eine klassische Reklame. Immer komisch, "fow vay" zu hoeren, sonst "vee-double-you."

Epitaxial?

I knew a guy who had a '47 Plymouth. I got to ride in it once. That thing trembled and wobbled over the pavement. It was not confidence-inspiring.

Saturn could produce a Vista Cruiser. They'll put their badge on anybody's cars.

I grew up in South Bend and knew the daughter of one of the partners who built the Avanti IIs. You saw a fair number of Avantis in South Bend — I mean, not gobs, but more probably than in any other place on the map. And in all my years, before now I've never seen one that was not in top nick.

I remember seeing one of these around my Impala, Catalina, LeSabre, and Galaxie neighborhood in the 70s and wondering what counter-culture the owner must belong to. S/he must have been friends with the lady who drove the VW Type 3 fastback.

@Murilee Martin: I know what you mean. I was the boss my last 5 years in tech writing and I had to take myself out back any number of times for being such a damn cheapskate.

CAR BOMB!

heh. I was a technical writer for 13 years before I crossed over to the dark side of quality assurance. Oh, and in there I edited computer books, and wrote a couple, full time and freelance.

@mytdawg: I came here specifically to say that every beater '70 I ever saw was this color. Nice to know I'm not alone in that perception. What in heaven's name made this color so popular? Give me a nice midnight-blue '68 coupe anyday over this.

Even though my dad had a '57 Ford that he swore by for many years, I pick the Dodge. It looks more complete and you can't argue with slant sixness. But I'd talk that guy down, way down, to like a grand.

In 1984 some friends and I rented a blue Cavalier sedan and drove it 1000 miles on a road trip. Most awfully uncomfortable car I've ever driven. And the steering wheel blocked half of the speedometer.

I got my fingers pinched in the passenger-side rear window of a Nova coupe once. Ow. Obviously, I'm still not over it, 30+ years hence.
