You'd be surprise how much of it is build into the city code. Many cities throughout Southern California make it illegal to have front yards without lawns, and haven't been updated to reflect the need or want for natives/low water plants.

Yup, linux is super easy (or it is on many models) but windows and os x would present a driver challenge I would think. I'm a pretty solid apple guy when it comes to personal computers but this thing is Win 10 would be interesting for sure.
