Madeline Albright is 78 years old. She was born in fucking 1938 in fucking Czechoslovakia until FUCKING HITLER forced her family into exile in England during the Holocaust (in which THREE of her Grandparents died). She lived through the blitz in London, hiding under a metal fucking table during Nazi bombings.

I think the way the message is being presented is off, but there is something awesome about a bunch of older ladies who have done their best to pave the way for an easier, freer existence for the women coming behind them getting excited about the possibility of having a women as the president of the United States.

It’s amazing how desperately some commenters are looking for something to be offended by. “Wait, none of you feminazis are complaining about having to register for the draft? But I had an awesome rant about how sexist and hypocritical you all are! I know — I’ll just pretend being opposed to the draft altogether is

Well, I am too, but I have a 18-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son. If he’s going to have to register at 18, she should have to as well. If we have to have a draft then we should make it equal. The IDF has been doing it for decades, it’s hardly a new concept.

Ok I freely admit that I’m too old for the draft so that may color my view.

*shrug*

Alternately, alternately we can attract people into our armed services via solid wages and comprehensive post-service benefits.

I wonder if having more women around would cut down on some of the atmosphere of machismo that breeds rape culture?

No one was. However, the largest feminist organization in the US, NOW has been arguing for equal treatment in selective service since the seventies.

This is precisely why women can’t be SEALs. Their periods put the whole team at risk for a shark attack!

This is absolutely true. And, if captured, we know female soldiers are in for sexually-based torture that male soldiers wouldn’t likely endure. So there’s that, too.

They're going to attract bears!

Just what we need, women menstruating all over our nice battlefields.

Personally, I just don’t understand why women continue to join the military when we’ve heard all these horror stories about widespread sexual abuse and a system that only makes it worse for survivors. I know there are efforts being made to change that, but it’s not like the problem is disappearing, and it’s not like

It would be purely a symbolic gesture, of course, but a good one. There is no draft, there hasn’t been a draft in 40 years, and the country wouldn’t put up with a draft, barring an invasion of the Brain Bugs from Andromeda. The Selective Service now is merely a phantom limb.

alternatively, get rid of selective service altogether. If a real emergency comes up, people will volunteer, and if not, there are places for those records anyway, such as the DMV.

Yeah, I don’t see the problem with this. And it is one of the constant arguments you hear from a certain segment of the population- if women truly want to be equal then they should have to register for the draft. Implying of course that women are the ones who had control over that decision.

I feel like they expect women all over the country to clutch their pearls as they loudly gasp, “No!” and fall upon their fainting couches, when really most people will be like, “Yup, sounds fair, you gonna mail that to me, or. . . ?”

As a woman, it is hard to argue for equality without agreeing that women should have to register. So bring it on. Give us the same rights and requirements as men.

Now that we are “allowed” in combat zones, I agree. Great us as full citizens.
