Usually that's what it is. People have bad experiences when they pay the dealership $300 to replace a coolant sensor or the like and because of that the MKIV gen will always be hounded by armchair critics the world over.

Couldn't have summed that up better myself. I'm tired of fighting my MKIV in the garage every third weekend.
