The Impreza is an economy, personally I think it's a good decision to increase its econominical-ness (I have no idea what word would work there). The current model got horrible gas mileage for it's segment while not being sporty enough to compete in the "sporty car" segment.

It's your driving; my 2008 GTI has 40k on the original brakes with a few thousand miles left in the rear and a whole lot left in the front.

I love the added practicality of my GTI, but 90% of the time it's unnecessary. Although I probably wouldn't choose a beetle over a GTI personally, I could see why someone would simply for the sake of having a car that looks very "different".
