Back in the days of Group B rallying they had 'flying mechanics' that rode in helicopters over the rally cars as they were racing through a stage. If an accident happened they would land close by with spares and try to repair the car to get it back on the road with a minimal loss of time. Those were the days.

This entire story is nonsense. The US and Russia have a long history of these types of incidents during the Cold War, at least a few of them have resulted in loss of air crew lives, certainly on the side of the US when things went wrong, perhaps as well for the Soviets.
