I tried to watch Tales from the Loop and had the same experience. I was really excited to get into some retro sci-fi but life right now is weird enough and that show is SAD.

Whilst it was clearly sacrificed for expediency, it was most likely Lyndon’s fall that tipped Stewart over the edge. It’s safe to assume that when Lyndon went quiet, Stewart became concerned and watched what happened using Deus and then fell into a Shakespeare quoting stupor.
