This depends on company policy. Some companies offer actual paid military leave, some companies offer differential pay, some only allow unpaid leave. They must allow you the time, they don’t have to pay you for it, though. 

So then just cancel the national guard in the meantime?

Charging kids to go to public school is the complete opposite of what public schools exist for. 

Ah, yes, cut teacher benefits. Great solution. Those damn teachers are all overcompensated anyway. Did you know they can get sick all summer and not have to take a single day of sick leave?

They are subject to the free market in the sense that they have to compete for talent with private employers. For bus drivers, the option is “you can drive a bus, or you can not drive a bus.” So the school needs to make bus driving attractive enough to outweigh the negatives. Either way, they come at a cost to the state. But full time national guard personnel have full time missions, and won’t be pulled from those to drive buses. These are traditional guard members being pulled in for active duty orders temporarily. 

Some get actual paid military leave, some get differential pay (company pays the difference between what you normally make and what the guard pays), some just get unpaid leave. It all depends on the company and their leave policies. 

What? The national guard isn’t free labor for the state. They get paid while they’re activated.
