I was raised Catholic and certainly think A LOT of criticism of the church is well deserved, but here it definitely seems like the issue has nothing to the church and everything to do with a particular school’s lack of resources.

Yeah, that’s what I was getting from it. It sounds like their position wasn’t punitive, as it’s presented here, but they just had no way to teach a child who couldn’t come to school and were trying to determine what other programs might serve her.
As to your question about morality being evolved — I don’t disagree that it is — but you seem to be having your cake and eating it too here. Your discussion assumes both that morality is evolved according to the needs of social groups and that there are universal moral constants like all lives are valuable and that…
Highly recommend Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger, which I think is still on netflix instant. Absolutely fascinating.
Hm, don’t have time to rewatch the Justin Beiber Roast, but since it’s Martha Stewart in the headline I’m hoping it’s a reference to that?
Jesus fucking Christ. That sounds awful, though I’m glad you’re good now.
Oh yeah, I’m not doubting that they are, I just think it’s interesting that some environments can produce lots of open bullying, and some that you would think might on paper produce little to none. There weren’t tons of open kids at my school, but the handful that were seemed to fare alright. And, aside from the the…
That’s awful and I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Early May. Law School.
I have a pair of high waisted jeans from madewell that I like. My only complaint is, when I got them they fit perfectly, but I’ve gotten better about running since I got them and now have a slightly smaller waist so while they still fit my hips and thighs fine, they gap a little in the waist now (though maybe that’s…
The fact that you’re aware that you have to change the locks is probably a sign that breaking up is the right thing here. Also, I get that it’s difficult to get some distance and look objectively at the faults of people when you’re close to them and care about them and separate the innocent flaws from the toxic ones.…
Ah ... my finger is mostly on the pulse of commercial travel accidents ... are the rails crumbling as quickly as the rest of our infrastructure?
Dude. I am also sitting home alone drinking and pretending to study for finals while my SO is away. His job is not transportation, but he’s basically going to be on a plane or train every day for the next month, and planes and trains tend to give me anxiety, so I feel ya. Raising this glass of shitty, shitty, trader…
Well, yeah, the cute thing would be a tad condescending, but if she’s the type of person who would harass someone to spite you — or harass someone anyway because you’re making it sound like she has a shaky handle on other people’s boundaries — you might need a new girlfriend.
It was really heartbreaking. Especially when you hear it back to back with the one from a few years earlier where he’s talking extremely casually and unconcernedly about using drugs, but also how he’s just bought a house and would like to find someone, etc.
You could add, “so don’t make a project out of her because at some point it’s going to stop being cute and become harassment.”
So for some reason I went down a Harris Wittels podcast rabbit hole this week. As of right now I have convinced myself that they should really replace the DARE program in schools with his two episodes on You Made It Weird.
incognito?
This should work, “this won’t work because the waitress is monogamous and currently in a committed relationship.” :-)
I haven’t gone through all the articles you posted, but they seem to be assuming that evolved altruistic behavior, a capacity for empathy, and some sense of social mores (which, it’s not news to me that animals are capable of that) is the same thing as morality. I would argue that’s not the case. There’s a reason most…
