You can be aware that you're dreaming but not be in control of your actions. There are different degrees of lucidity. Rather than trying to wake up, you should try to do something that is different than the flow of the dream. Take control of the dream.

L-Tryptophan is a great supplement for lucid dreaming. Also I would suggest getting a guided induction. Stephen LaBerge has a good one. Read a book on lucid dreaming too.

That's called lucid dreaming. Some people experience very vividly and have a problem waking up. Even people who practice it as a hobby experience false awakenings where they wake up and go through the motions of their morning ritual only to find out that they're still dreaming.

You can practice dream retention. You just won't remember the breaks in between. It would seem like one long dream with different scenarios.

Yeah. I used to practice lucid dreaming regularly. Started taking supplements to help. I still go lucid every so often. Actually went lucid a few nights ago.
