The Korean view, which is pretty convincing, is that the body of water wasn’t widely called “Sea of Japan” until Japan invaded Korea (essentially making the Sea almost exclusively Japanese territory).
The name “Sea of Japan” wasn’t widely used until Japan controlled the Korean Peninsula in the early 20th Century. Prior to that, it went by many names, as there was no international standard at the time. It was often referred to as the East Sea or the Korean Sea.
