A lot has changed since my first Linux install of Ubuntu 8.04 on the cheapest laptop money could buy. Unity has a bit too much eye-candy for my taste, and Mint's Cinnamon desktop pushes all the same buttons as old-school GNOME (lightweight, easy to customize, simple graphics). As much as I love it, though

Does anybody know if Verizon is still able to block unauthorized tethering from jailbroken iPhones?

Sounds familiar...

Has anyone else had trouble getting Jitsi to work? It rejected my SIP account outright and my XMPP, Facebook, and Google accounts were indefinitely in the process of connecting. I'm wondering if it might be an issue with my university's network (it wouldn't be the first) or if I'm just too daft to set it up properly.

Back when I used to travel mostly by air, I would leave as much as I could at home, usually ending up with just my smartphone, my tablet, and maybe my camera. Now I drive more, so packing light is not a huge concern.

I bought a shiny new macbook about a year ago, and now that I'm starting to do more resource-intensive computing on it, I'm thinking about upgrading the HDD to an SSD and the RAM to 8 or 16 GB. But that won't happen for a while because of my budget. I'll probably upgrade to Mountain Lion soon enough though - that

Have you tried Evernote?

Happy Friday, all!

Agreed. Probably wouldn't be an issue if you clipped off the bits around the outlets, though. Or used a plastic basket.

Hey everyone! I am a college student and my roommate has recently started snoring. :-( There are only 3 weeks left in the semester, so switching rooms would not be worth the hassle. I have tried cheap earplugs, but they always seem to fall out of my ears by morning. Can anybody recommend a good brand or pair?

I wonder how this compares to Waze's implementation of traffic information. Since I use an iOS device for navigation, GMaps isn't really an option anyway, but I am still curious.

Regarding the smartphone screen tip: I have my iPhone configured so that triple-clicking the home button toggles inverted colors on the LCD. (settings>general>accessibility, no jailbreak required) This way, I can avoid a bright screen, but still be able to see what I pull up. OSX has a similar function that is

Thanks, I must have missed that.

So I've been daydreaming lately about setting up my own website using Squarespace for hosting and Exchange Online for e-mail, calendars, etc. What I need help with is finding a reasonably priced domain registration service with good customer service and business practices.

A lot of people are recommending buying a used Android phone off eBay and just using it without a SIM. Also, Samsung currently makes something comparable to an iPod Touch. A good resource for info about these things is [anythingbutipod.com]

@emren If I'm not mistaken, you can do this with Google Voice for free. It has apps for iOS and Android, and you should be able to create groups of contacts (students, teachers, etc.)

Handbrake works wonderfully for this purpose if you have VLC Media Player installed. Both are free and open-source.

I can't think of any reason why I would do this. What is your reasoning?

This app rocks. Thanks for sharing.

I haven't used any of these myself, but here is a list of similar apps/services:
