I think that sort of works though. My head-canon is that the entire story is Ted being an unreliable narrator and fixating on Robin. Not realizing her faults and overemphasizing the qualities he chose to recognize. I don't know of that's what the show runners were going for but it at least excuses the inconsistencies.
