I wouldn't say cheap, in my area it's much higher that a plane ticket.

For many of us it's about the trip and scenery.
I prefer train to flights and have taken a 29 hour train ride with sleeping compartment myself.
The thing I noticed, is that Amtrak looks nothing like this fancy car they had. Even in first class which is what the sleeper section is considered.
