“Besides, if I want my husband’s name in comic sans on my neck I’ll get it. ‘

There is your problem right there. A tattoo artist is an artist. They have the right to refuse anything. Would you ask Andy Warhol to paint your livingroom in a nice eggshell white? Artists, even tattoo artists, are craftsman, that can pick and choose their work.

Hmmm. Seems like he respected her enough not to go forward with the tattoo. Not doing it cost him a potential client - I’m sure the decision wasn’t made rashly by the artist.

Cool. But you should also respect the artist who spent time on their craft and business enough to take “No” for an answer. If one artist doesn’t feel comfortable tattooing your husband’s name on your neck then feel free to find one that will and leave the attitude at home. :)

That’s poorly done as FUCK.

That tattoo is butt-ugly. YIKES.

Four hours, yeah you got ripped off by a shitty artist. It looks like garbage, it’s crooked as hell and there isn’t a solid line or field of color in the whole damn thing. Also, “adding onto it” $50 at a time isn’t the way to get an actually good chest piece. You go girl.

That looks like shit, it’s crooked as hell and there’s isn’t a solid damn line in the thing. “Adding onto it” in $50 increments isn’t the way to get a chest piece. You go girl.

um no, you wont get it. not by an artist who doesnt want to make the art for you.

You have a strong opinion about individual rights and talk about how the tattoo is a colabrative process, but then you completely ignore Dan’s right to take part in the process... or not. I think if you take a step back, you’ll realize that personal rights aren’t due to just one side of the equation. Everyone has the

No it isn’t, it doesn’t look fucking hot, and it’s far from classy, and it IS f-ing TACKY....... Even if it means a lot to the person, it still can (and will) look tacky..... especially in a few years when it doesn’t look as sharp as the first year....

From someone who works in the body modification industry, it’s not that Dan thinks it, it’s that he knows the vast majority of the population still thinks tattoos are counter culture. Refusing to do neck tattoos on non-heavily tattooed people is very, very common in the tattooing world. It's his right not to perform

Yeah really what does Dan know its not like he tattoos for a living or is some kind of professional. You know better though. you are not dumb at all.

If that chest tattoo took four hours, you got ripped off. And the proportions are all wrong. It’s bulging out on the bottom left and is rotated 10-15 degrees counter-clockwise.

Tattoo artists are not in the service industry. I (a bartender and server) am in the service industry. Tattoo artists are artists. It’s right there in the title.

And like (m)any lucky artists They work as individuals on commission to create artwork. Which is why some have years long wait lists and can choose to work

I think the issue is the same as someone being asked to do a very specific sculpture that they think sucks. If you don’t want your name attached to an artistic endeavor, you have the right to refuse.

I hate to be Team Tattoo Artist, but just like you can decide where you want your tattoos, he can also decide what work he’ll stand behind and what he WON’T. Clearly you have artistic differences, as evident by your contempt of his other work. So why would you use him in the first place?

I understand why this was an upsetting experience, but tattoo artists refuse jobs all the time for all sorts of reasons. Many have a no necks, no hands policy - it’s quite common. And, as you discovered, what’s off-limits to one artist is totally okay with another - you were able to get exactly what you wanted in the
