I hope that's just misdirection with the obvious reference to Kahn. Not because I necessarily think it's too early in the series to kill Spock, but because I think it would be lazy to copy such a major plot point of the original Trek films.
It seems like most trailers these days do that or the ultra dramatic drum beat with each jump to a different clip. A bit overused.
