The reason the f-14 tomcat has been hyped is not because of top gun but because even in stock condition if brought back into service the OLD f-14Ds are perfectly capable of carrying out strike missions in today’s US Navy. Most f-14 pilots would jump at the chance to ride one again even with older tech.
