To be fair,  Cavill could have given an entertaining performance as well. He *can* be charming. I've seen him do it. It's just that Snyder specifically directed him to be a cipher. Which was...a decision.

Richard and Mortimer is, at its absolute best, mildly entertaining. It’s “smart” and funny to those douchebro guys who are neither smart nor particularly funny, but are convinced they’re the wittiest person in every room. This show personifies the unearned confidence of straight white men.

Does this mean I have to put up with The Rick and Morty Guy at work again? I don’t need someone in the break room telling me both that I “really have to watch it” and also that “the real jokes” will be over my head, Brandon*!

Yeah, War Letters isn’t the sort of bit that earns plaudits from comedy critics - it’s a recurring sketch, it’s a pretty simple concept, it’s just a couple actors looking into the camera for a few minute. But it’s also consistently funny, which is sort of the whole point of the endeavor.
