At my job we have a large array of smartphones I various years, manufacturers, and myself that we test against network equipment. The automation necessitates that these devices are on and connected to PCs via USB at all times. One of our biggest challenges is battery swelling caused by overcharging the devices.

That seems like a myopic definition of hacking.  Sure, some methods are now technically sophisticated than others, but to say social engineering isn't a hacking method would be redefining the term.
