Drive in is fantastic because of how it's aged. They are shocked and amazed by simple concepts like front wheel drive and hatch backs which had been around for decades ast the time.

They could and car companies do already do this but it's still cheaper to use buttons.

Its cheaper. On a lot of modern cars the automatic shifter sends out a signal rather than mechanically doing anything. If you just want to send a signal using a button saves money. 

They’re just not selling it in the USA, they are still selling it everywhere else.
