Taxes on new cars in some (most/all?) european countries are absurd. The cars themselves are quite reasonable but that price can practically double with tax. So what happens is that people end up driving half the car for the same money as in the USA. They spend about the same, maybe a little less as you point out.

Engineers understand it and there are some good-at-school types that converted to that game. Even occasionally someone with some technical skill. Most of the engineers who don’t play it aren’t unaware of it, they make an aware choice not to play that game because of how disgusting that game is to them.
