The way I took it was she wasn’t going to let Thor face the big bad alone, and wanted to save the children.
Not for love or because of a boy... but willing to sacrifice to do the right thing... even if it killed her.
They setup the cancer before she even got Mjolnir. It wasn’t exactly out of nowhere, and certainly not a last second twist like you’re implying here.
I was really afraid when I realized what they were adapting that they wouldn’t have the guts to go through with her death. Not doing so would have sucked the emotional depth out of the story and arc.
