Die Hard worked despite Bruce Willis, an actor who has made a career out of not trying very hard and coasting by on his smug aint-I-cool mugging. It worked because it had a fantastic villain, Hans Gruber. Any movie without a decent ringleader against McClane is always stupid and tedious — and that's most of them.
