The book Watchmen is about a bunch of members of a somewhat embarrassing, kinky, dysfunctional underground dress-up scene who attempt to take control over their lives, suddenly finding their notion of power made ridiculous and impotent by the looming nuclear threat, as embodied by Dr. Manhattan.

Yes, but we're also well past a comedian overload and still people do it. And just like the comedy boom and bust of the 80s, the people who stayed in it and did it for the love of it even when it wasn't financially rewarding are the ones who lasted and came out in the late 90s and early 00s with success.
