From what it seems like, it absorbs you at a cellular level. It’s not really well explained (movie science!), but that would be more like what bacteria and viruses do, minus the mimicing part.

Parasites typically use another host to grow and multiply, but don’t usually destroy said host (some do, but they are the exception to the rule). Symbiotes also use a host, but the difference is parasites use a host to the detriment of it’s overall well-being while symbiotes form a mutually beneficial relationship.

The Thing was never a parasite. It was able to mimic and absorb other forms of life. Maybe your thinking of something else?

Or some of us just found it incredibly boring, with some obvious plot holes. Understanding what was going on doesn’t automatically mean all of us will enjoy it, or make it any less of a long boring space soap opera.
