I don't really run into cold weather where I'm at and my dog has a double coat, but I always make a habit of checking his paws and coat for irritants (spurs, ticks, debris) after outings. Some simple paw hygiene can go a long way in helping prevent extreme cases of "frito feet".

Every few years I re-read Frank Herbert's Dune. The last time I read it I focused on the trappings of each character, specifically, how many of the characters are subverted by their goals for power.

This is a legit strategy— I use this when buying things like furniture on craigslist.
