You have to earn trust before you can get a group of people to cooperate, let alone collaborate on anything.

I’m the same. It’s given me a reputation of being disagreeable, but someone needs to help people think through dumb ideas by poking holes into them. I’ve seen enough easily preventable things happen.

5. Quit and work for someone else.

Always have an alternative ready and present it in a way that lets them think they thought of it. The “yes... and” construct is useful here.

If you want to encourage discussion of various perspectives, you may have to lay the groundwork first. By that I mean discuss, as a team, how disagreements will be settled and how decisions will be made.

Speaking as a boss, I really wish my staff would disagree with me more.
