Point of information: the Mies condos are not exactly "near the Detroit River." You first have to skip over parking lots, a couple of streets, and Jefferson Avenue. If they're "near the Detroit River," so is everything south of Grand Circus Park.

Along with railroad cars on the West Side, there were elevated subway lines on Second, Third, Sixth and Ninth Avenues. They were around as late as 1955. Lake Shore Drive is only a nightmare in morning rush (7-9 am) and afternoon rush (4:30 to 7 pm). If Matt times it right, he can get spectacular photos. Just after the evening rush, the sun starts to set and the lights come on, and it's glorious.
