The Christmas Special and the Dinosaurs episode shows that 11 will occasionally pick up short-term companions but as he said to Amy in the Dino episode, "They're just people, not Ponds." The Ponds are who 11 keeps coming back for.

The overall plot was thin — it reminded my friend and I of an RTD-era episode. (Adipose, anyone?) The character interaction totally made up for it IMHO.
