Hi Joanna! I read the New Yorker article to which your article refers, and I enjoyed it only insofar as I enjoy reading any piece of journalism; I read the newspaper, magazines, and online print hoping to find interesting, not necessarily didactic (but certainly informative) prose.

it’s only weird because NY city has changed its attitude and laws regarding rent control. the word you’re looking for is ‘gentrification’. This woman paid her fair share in rent over a number of years, until the building became prime real estate. Sounds a lot like the generations of families living in the Bay Area…
