Those don’t seem to be any more gemlike than any other gray rectangles. 

Seems like an obvious technological dead end. Flying involves raising a weight - plane plus fuel and cargo (including people) a certain height above the ground. For efficient flying that’s routinely up to 30,000 feet. Raising a mass takes a lot of energy. Try riding your bike uphill - even a slight uphill. Batteries

My 2018 US Subaru has lights that turn. To show off they turn back and forth when you start the car.
