"Mayor, why did you tear up these plans for public housing?"

I know about this fight from a history standpoint, but it also came up in the great Netflix docu-series "The Odyssey of Film," when they were talking about recording events in real time and using natural lighting. The Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight is notable not just in boxing history, but on the effect it had on filming

A boxing fan are you, hanshot? I've been watching the sport's sad, slow decline for more than 20 years now. It's in my blood, actually (no pun intended).

Just looked it up, holy shit. Considering that almost every time I've seen Jeff Bridges outside of "Fat City" he's had a greyish beard and a drunk/grizzled look about him, that was quite a surprise.

The only time that's happened to me was during a fight weekend in Atlantic City a while back. Got ungodly drunk and woke up the next day with a huge gash in my leg, and blood all over the bed. I honestly still can't remember how I got it. Alcohol's a trip, man.

At this point she probably just lives in a room in the back. Every night the owner puts her back in her steel bed and turns on that white noise machine with children crying. Helps her sleep.

That'll be the plot when they make the American adaptation of "Battle Royale." Just school kids chosen by lottery to put on boxing gloves and beat the crap out of each other. You know, to take out all that pubescent aggression.

Yes, but I think Punchkicker would be a kickboxer.

You're quite welcome. Gardner's book "Fat City" was the material the film was adapted from. Short but very enjoyable read.

Speaking of boxing films, I'm really looking forward to "Bleed For This." I'm amazed it took them this long to make a Vinny Paz biopic, as his life and career are both incredibly inspirational and ripe material for dramatic works. Plus it's going to be awesome seeing Miles Teller beat the shit out of people.

Did you ever read the Leonard Gardner book? It was very good. If you did and you liked it, might I suggest "This Bloody Mary is the Last Thing I Own," a boxing book that also sets a noir-ish tone. And just for grins, may I also recommend my favorite boxing book, the bio "Hands of Stone: The Life and Legend of Roberto

That quote from the trailer "I will give you my everything" does sound like an encapsulation of every boxing cliche. But after "Nightcrawler," I'm not gonna doubt Gyllenhaal's acting ability ever again. I'll see it for him, but I don't have high hopes for the overall story given the trailer.

I don't even think his mother could remember when Jeff Bridges looked that young. Great movie.

I have a particular love for boxing movies. In terms of under appreciated ones, "Fat City" with Stacy Keach and a young Jeff Bridges is one of the most notable. Managed to find the humanity in the life of a middle-of-the-road boxer, someone too bad to be a champion but too good to be a loser forced out of the

I just love the picture they're using for this article. Reynolds has this blank look, like he'd rather be anywhere else than doing green screen work. "What? I'll be holding a green machine gun? *sigh* Sounds stupid, but okay."

Unfortunately, due to the ungodly amount of money it makes, I don't think the NFL will ever be unable to exert power over its brand. It raked in over $9 billion last year, and that's definitely enough money to buy some good PR. Obviously you can't silence all your critics, but the NFL for the most part makes sure to

"Yo homie, is that my briefcase?"

Don't forget "you know the word 'louche?'" No Frank, I fucking don't. You're not exactly gonna solve all your gangster problems with vocab words and dental hygiene. Also, I liked how in one scene, Frank's talking to his wife about how he doesn't want to adopt because it wouldn't be his kid, it would be "somebody

I feel like the whole "shootout" scene is coming at the perfect time in the course of the story. We're past the initial mystery stage which was pretty much just gathering information and finding out who is connected to who. But it's before the true big bad (or bads) have been revealed, so there's still some suspense

"That chick looks tired. What did she just say, her bed's 'made of steel?' I don't even know what the fuck that means. Maybe she should take a break, eat something. She'd better not be hungry though."
