I bought it when it came out and just forgot to play it--glad it’ll be on PS Plus so there are more people to do public matching with. Did they upgrade for PS5?

I am now just realizing that “games as a service” can be abbreviated as GaaS...

Ah, the annoying and pedantic side of Japan. I absolutely love the country and can’t wait to be able to travel there again, but showing these kinds of cultural, uh, quirks is healthy for anyone who might idolize Japan from afar and not realize that for every amazing thing there’s some completely arcane, obtuse shikatag

What a strange thing to get riled up over. It was a joke about Nintendo’s rabid legal attitudes, not a “prediction” by any stretch of the imagination.

Next up: Takedown notices from the Big N

Re: YouTube, they had 20M MAU in June 2006, a year and change after their Feb 2005 beta launch. While YouTube got much, much larger, that was still ridiculously fast growth, especially in a pre-smartphone world, and was likely part of the reason Google paid $1.65B for them.

Honestly, the closest I can think of it now is how games will presumably start offloading calculations to the cloud and could conceivably create more complex games running on the same hardware. To the best of my knowledge the only game that has really done that was Crackdown 3 and even then only in a specific

Seriously. Looking back on my Destiny obsession, it’s kind of bizarre to remember how easy it was to get sucked into grindy, repetitive tasks in order to grab loot or plow through dailies/weeklies and how much work I did to convince myself I was enjoying them even though what I was enjoying was some very, very good

Interesting. I’m not super in the know here, but I’m surprised to hear it’s having a moment—with Death Note and Nine Hours and that kind of thing being big a while ago now, it seems like its moment would’ve passed, if anything.

Hah I was thinking the same thing. He looks like when SNL has to shoehorn its cast to look like characters or celebrities. Totally bizarro.

Sometimes I think Nintendo is playing 16D chess with their releases. And then I remember that Nintendo would never release something as mainstream as chess and instead must be playing some 16D ko shogi variant only popular in Okinawa.

Yeah, I emailed them after making my post and they said I should received my order in Q2 so... by June, I guess.

Looks nice for anyone happy to wait a year. Ordered the KRZ vinyls more than a year ago and the discs still haven’t arrived. Checked back in September or so, was quoted covid complications, and told they would arrived by mid-November. Nada since then.

I mean, it also looks like the unused cactus sprite from SMB: The Lost Levels: https://www.suppermariobroth.com/post/159615490160/unused-sprite-of-a-cactus-from-the-japanese-super

That’s interesting. Before launch, there was a lot of discussion about Sony vs. MS on price points and it seems like both companies might have driven each other’s prices down in an effort to win the PR war on pricing... just for there to be not enough supply to meet demand anyway.

Saying “something will step up to swoop in” is living in denial about just how difficult it is to design a console.

Mobile doesn’t compete with major consoles.

Just read the Ars Technica article someone else mentioned (can’t seem to find the comment)--interesting analysis for sure and recommend for others interested in this topic: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/02/scalpers-arent-the-main-reason-you-cant-find-a-new-console/

Every console launch has shortages - hell, there were Switch shortages LAST YEAR and that’s not a new console - none have resulted in a new competitor capitalizing on it.

As mentioned, only Sony really knows the impact scalpers are having. It may be much smaller than it feels, who knows.
