The schools should not pay them. Way too complicated when you realize you would have to pay all student athletes in all sports, men and women, at all schools big and small, rich and poor. Any way to divide up who is “worth” more or should be paid more would ultimately be unfair and a huge pain in the ass to figure out.

If they were paid, then a lot of smaller schools would go bankrupt as sports revenue is a major resource for other areas. Without football there are a number of sports that just would not exist at the college level.

Your spirited — but simplistic — argument becomes very complicated very quickly when you consider that there are a few hundred schools who play D-1 college and/or football.

Few of those schools pay their coaches anywhere near what Saban gets. So how much would you pay the kids on the teams whose coaches earn, say,…
