Yeah this is all on the up and up. Replying to bring this thread to the top, since I think it’s important to clarify this is not money-grubbing, this is a sister trying to protect her brothers estate from going into probate, which is a special level of hell.

Yeah, especially since a lot of this is going to be ongoing for a century-plus. Trying to negotiate rights to his music when split among 5 sibs and half sibs gets messy, and then the rights pass on to *their* kids and potentially split even more, and it’ll be a nightmare.

Still better to get a will. It speeds up the release of the inheritance, you can mention assets your loved ones may not know you have like a box at the bank, items you’ve loaned to someone and insurance. Plus it covers other things like your burial.

BINGO. I was bitching about how much stuff I am still trying to get done after moving four weeks ago, and a friend said “is there anything worse than moving?” and the one thing I could think of was trying to tie up someone’s estate. The more you have written down, the easier it will be for someone.

Holographic wills were one of my favorite law school concepts. No holograms allowed son.

If you’re a women you become the administratrix.

I know I thought about it after I wrote it but I was like nah, someone will giggle and that’ll be nice for them.

I’m not a legal person at all

IIRC, Bob Marley did not have a will either, and that turned into a huge mess for his family.

Thanks! That’s what I thought but this is all completely foreign to me!

Thanks! I’m not a legal person at all so I wasn’t sure.

Prince’s estate ends up in probate, and suddenly the Minneapolis police force starts looking like Dubai.

I mean, if you die without heir or issue, whatever, I guess?

TMZ headline is misleading. She isn’t suing for the assets.

How is it possible that someone so wealthy, with such a complicated business structure, would not have a will within a year or two of achieving that success? Honest question.

If he didn't leave a will with that kind of fortune, that is astounding. It amazes me that his advisors would allow that to happen.

She’s signing up to be the petitioning to have a special administrator appointed to the estate.

Time to go look up Minnesota’s intestacy statute...

Y’all, go make a will. Now. Even if your assets are minimal or just bunch of books and shoes. In many states you just need to write it on your own and simply take it to a bank to have it notarized for free. You will save your loved ones, friends or family, lots of headaches.

Is she filing for his assets, as TMZ claimed, or is she filing to get a lawyer on this stat so it doesn’t become a circus? Since there’s no will and she named all his siblings plus “potential” heirs, it doesn’t seem like she’s trying to do anything shady...
