Considering that the guy who wrote/drew it graduated from college/art school, worked in advertising successfully mind you, quit, and then created a classic comic strip that almost 20 years after it has stopped publication is still talked about. I would say laziness has little to do with it.

The first two panels could stand by themselves and it would still be a poignant strip.
