Man, I forgot about how awful some of the Rove devised attacks on his military service was until you just reminded me. There were the same Trumpian implications of, “well, he got caught so how good of a soldier was he?” awfulness. Now that I think about that I’m surprised he even wants Bush to speak at his funeral.

The Maverick thing started around 1999 when he was running in the primary against Bush. I’d also be willing to bet that Trump’s disdain for McCain’s military service comes from the Karl Rove tactic of attacking McCain’s service during the primary.
