Those classes most certainly have value, and I don’t mean to diminish that at all. But if the trade-off is a few years of free art classes for the eventual loss of their homes/neighborhood to wealthy entrepreneurs and investors, I don’t think it is worth it. That’s all.

It’s such a complex problem. But I think the activists are addressing what they can (and it’s pretty clear this is a case of someone wealthy from outside the community taking advantage of a potentially up-and-coming area).

There are both Boyle Heights activists and representatives from NYC anti-gentrification groups there. I live in LA too, and work at UCLA. These aren’t just a bunch of UCLA students. But something tells me you full well know that.

Non-loophole riddled laws can be written. There are legal remedies to gentrification, primarily zoning laws (UCLA law has a somewhat extensive write up of legal methods to combat gentrification). It is possible, if society really wanted to get behind gentrification eradication. That’s not a given, though.

There is a nuance and you are attuned to it. The artists in this piece above are not. The talent agency opening what amounts as a safe space for their wealthy clients are not. Fuck them and the Maserati they rode in on.

These activists are just doing whatever they can to hold on to their homes and neighborhood. I think most people can empathize with that. I certainly do. And I would hope the privileged wouldn’t be so myopic as to find themselves unable to acknowledge that free art classes amount to less than a finger in the dyke when

Same as California. Now people who are the fabric of the community, teachers, policemen, firemen etc. can’t even live in the areas that they service. It’s ridiculous.

Because you’re buying up limited housing stock in a poor area and helping push up the prices to the point where the people who actually live there can’t afford to anymore.

Waitaminute...

Joe, we’d think far more highly of you if you admitted you fucked this up royally. You were NOT her advocate. You snickered with the rest of them. SHAME. I will never forget.

I still contend that Bernie message would have resonated ACROSS the Democratic party spectrum with the strength of the nomination behind him. Look at what he accomplished being a relative unknown AGAINST everything Hillary had going for her.

The whole “I feel really badly that she didn’t feel like the process worked” non-apology is not enough in this day and age. Has he thoroughly examined his part in the hearing that led to the process not working for her, not just what she felt? I expect better from him.

Her father was an American citizen I thought? Which means she probably counts as a “natural-born citizen”. The law hasn’t been settled on this one.

THANK YOU. Democrats have been playing these “lesser evil” politics for decades now, and losing badly. If a candidate can’t survive the “liberal circular firing squad” (i.e. basic vetting), how the hell are they going to survive a general election? I don’t get this weird demand to ignore obvious flaws in potential

Or even more deliciously: while he’s still alive. Let him have to see his own history be overwritten by someone smarter and more progressive.

Why are women always told to settle by the Democrats? We do all of the work, even if we don’t donate most of the money.

Not really. Democrats overwhelmingly have a positive view of Bernie when polled. Only something like 8% of them really hate him.

Fuck you, Joe. This was the perfect opportunity for you to own up to what you did and you blew it.

Thank You! We need to demand. more than the bare minimum! Why the fuck is it always PoC that are told to settle?!

I love Joe Biden as much as the next person, but I will always hold the Anita Hill proceedings against him. He wasn’t the only person involved in the process, but as the person in charge he gets the most of the blame for what happened because it was in his power to fix it.
