Those are the magnetic poles. This article appears to be about the geographic poles, the axis on which the Earth rotates.

Magnetic poles and rotational poles are not the same thing. :-(

An obvious flaw, but I like where they are trying to take this. Would be pretty awesome to have a gun that only allows the owner to shoot it. You could even add other people’s fingerprints (much like Touch ID on iOS) to authorize others. It would make your gun both more secure and more accessible to use in a situation…
