I thought the idea that this was random didn’t pass the smell test but I did think it was a genuine attack and he was targeted by some crazed fan/stalker. Crazy story and embarrassing look for everyone that used it to try and score political points re: Trump.

Sure but I don’t throw out those data points. A lot of great reporting is based on unnamed sources, for example our understanding of how the White House works behind the scenes. On the face of it your initial statement is basically advocating us to only listen to huckabee sanders to learn what’s going on.  Etc.

Sometimes people go off the record because they are sharing something they shouldn’t, like details of an ongoing police investigation. If reporting were just restricted to quotes of people going on the record it would be just PR, which to be fair, is basically the modern state of the news media.

I think it probably happened but was a targeted attack, not a random hate crime. That seems to make the most sense imo. “Both sides” are just looking for fuel for their narratives.

Yeah someone else would have filled in many of the gaps, the cultural moment of the 50-60s and the development of youth culture/pop music was bigger than just the Beatles. This guy would be a genius songwriter for sure and successful though as he mined that catelog. He’d be like basically Pharell Williams today and…
