It's generally fairly easy - there are some things that you have to ask the court for a continuance for and show "good cause" for the continuance (and "I just had a baby" would likely constitute "good cause") but for the most part, stipulating to a continuance with opposing counsel is enough. I was at a CMC recently getting a trial date, and opposing counsel announced that she just found out she is pregnant and will not be ready for trial until after maternity leave. The judge, a notorious jerk, made SUCH a big deal about it. Also, I too made the mistake of reading the comments on ATL. Super gross.

I think we are just reading it differently - she's wasn't referring to the patient (victim), she was referring to the nurse (perpetrator).

I totally read it as victim blaming as well, but after I re-read it I understood. Kara means that if you don't have a high tolerance for needy people, healthcare isn't the job for you, i.e. pick a career that suits your personality.
