Rape is brutal. Clickbait rape scenes on TV that don’t actually serve a narrative purpose do nothing to convey that fact- they just normalize sexual violence the way that regular plain-vanilla violence has been normalized.

I was a big fan of the books and the first couple seasons of the show. For me, the offensive/gratuitous parts of both the books and the shows were, for a long time, outweighed by the fact that the stories were really good and well done. Sadly, they no longer seem to have that counter-balance on the show of telling…

The show has a lot of brutality, sure, but it’s not “about” rape. The show has made rape expected at this point, and that’s the problem.

The point is that you can still tell the story without filming/showing/broadcasting it. At this point I firmly believe HBO does it solely to titillate (eww), not to tell a story.

The problem is that this is a deviation from the storyline in the books, and it makes next-to-no sense, and it is the second time the show has deviated from the books specifically to rape a central female character who is not raped in the books. So to answer your question, I thought the show was about A Song Of Ice…

No- that’s his point. They didn’t show the rape to somehow develop Max’s character or his understanding of their pain. It’s what they faced, and it’s what they’re escaping from, it’s about them, not about Max.
