Depression-era hobos referred to railroads as a "milk and honey route." There was a 1931 book called The Milk and Honey Route: A Handbook for Hobos by Dean Stiff that discussed hobo lore and the "hobo code" referred to in an early episode of Mad Men.

Actually, the dog (Polly - yes, it's sad that I remember that) was around for a long while, even into Betty's marriage to Henry. I don't think we've seen her since the move from Ossining to Rye, though.
