I mean I guess I agree...but at the same time, you compared an actual spacecraft to a fictional one. So yeah.

The leak is likely very deep. Therefore, capping it will just cause it to find other avenues to the surface. Now instead of a single identifiable leak in a relatively small location, you can have dozens of leaks spread out over a very large area.
Energy company guy here. Not an expert by any means, but I know we have wells & storage facilities where the pressure is well over 1000psi. My guess is this is a similar facility that would blow that material clean out instantly, otherwise they would’ve done something like you described.
