That does looks like the N47 diesel engine out of the 2007 320xd, on which AWD was an option. Although I don't like the shaft wrap theory, I suppose it would be possible based on year and option.

Consider that a light coating of frost on a wing surface is sufficient to disrupt airflow and increase stall speed. I would hate to image the condition of that elevator surface.

I share my daily driving between an e39 M5 and e30 318is, and although the 4 cyl is a bit timid compared to the M, the combination of sound, response, and lightweight, make it a ton of fun, without getting in too much trouble. A wide open throttle pull through the gears in the e30 and you are still in legal speed…
