Don't know why but I interpreted the story in a much more surreal and absurdist way.
At the end, Nick make him realize that the woman was the cause of his nightmares, but what's even more "Louiey" is the fact he's helping her (and fucking her, which is kind of absurd for him…) in his dreams.
