Rich linked back to an earlier Gawker article about the movie GBF in the second paragraph of this piece. It shows a pattern of the MPAA giving R-ratings to teen movies with LGBT themes, even if the movie’s content isn’t very objectionable in and or itself. I’m not saying it’s exactly the same.

Nowadays at movie theaters they actually card young-looking people at R-rated movies.

Good link back to the film, GBF, Rich. I watched it on Netflix and it was totally cute and innocuous. It’s a fairly fluffy teen movie without much objectionable content. But because it’s about a gay teen, the MPAA gave it an “R” rating, preventing many teens from seeing it.

Keep in mind that some of the targeted viewers are actual children. Someone mentioned Youtube toy unboxing videos - elementary schoolers watch those. Tons of middle schoolers are on Instagram. Young kids & teens aren’t necessarily savvy enough to understand what content is sponsored
