To be fair; cops often coddle suspects during interrogation if the suspect demonstrates a willingness to confess fully. So if a suspect is confessing; they will often offer and get him/her food and pretend to be their friend. during that period of cooperation.

Add to that mental illness and police not being able to help or handle those with mental illness and we have a giant stew of dysfunctional society. That man needed compassion and help; what he got was a rope and humiliation.

Seriously. When I first read “criminal trespass” and “Texas,” I immediately thought: he’s black and homeless. He could have simply been sleeping in a parking lot or on a sidewalk. 

Laws don’t stop anything 100%. Laws are to improve behavior. Do our murder laws do anything to prevent murder? Of course not. But we keep them. If we can pass laws that make it even a little more difficult for people to get lots of high-powered weapons so easily, they'll be worth it.

Exactly. If a store owner calls the cops on you and has you barred from their property, simply going back to that store (or even just standing outside of it) can be considered “criminal trespass.” It’s often no different than loitering, but with a name that implies much more criminality.
