It would be interesting to do a net CO2 analysis of cellulose aerogels - it’s not clear they would be carbon-negative. Freeze-drying is pretty energy intensive, not to mention production of the reinforcing polymer and hydrophobic silane modifier.

Though using waste paper as a source is novel, cellulose aerogels and the general procedures this group used to make them have been around for a long time... just go to Google Scholar and search “cellulose aerogel”
