Well I'm one Canadian that didn't find it offensive though I can't speak for the rest. We do have much more access to abortion here so it wouldn't be out of line. "Cause the Beaver always gives a dam! [about women's reproductive rights]" :)

Do you know the laws around this in the US and how this fits in with mandated reporting? I guess there must not be any since the parents actually approached him in the first place. In Canada there are laws against FGM and transporting minors away from Canada to have it done. The doctor would have to report the parents…
Yup three books - we'll see if it stays three movies or if they give in to the increasing use of "split the last book into two movies" we've seen in other YA adaptions recently, some good (HP) and some awful (Twilight)
I think it was Slate's Dear Prudence since that rang a bell for me too.
I know this is lactation massage but you can also get blocks in your lymph drainage in your breasts too, and there are massage therapists who have certification in that too. I wonder how similar they are? Next time I'm home and see my MT, I'll ask, unless anyone here knows?
Yeah, MnU Mum is out of the hospital today, I applied for another job on my practicum search, I successfully outmaneuvered my Dad who deliberately neglected to tell me about the upcoming provinicial election so that I wouldn't "cancel out his vote" and set up a designate to cast my vote tomorrow in my abscence and I…
I should disclaim why this one is on my personal list. It's a reminder to myself that sometimes guys can do really crappy things in relationships and to not make excuses for them. The woman in this song is so tied up in internalised sexism it's a good reminder not to be.
I agree with your point but I also see lots of commenters, specifically young women commenters talking about viewing Deen himself for their sexual gratification. There's a thin line between objectification and appreciation and I think for most part these young women are coming onto the side of appreciation - they not…
Maybe I'm oversimplifing Dines' argument but it sounds like to me that what she has a problem with is porn shot exclusively through the male gaze: that it turns women into sexual objects even if there is diversity in the types of bodies and if the act portrayed is genuinely enjoyed by the actresses and actors.
I know a veteran of Iraq who was both the interpreter and best marksperson of her squad. And you know, she couldn't even hold the gun in the standard position becuase they're not designed with breasts in mind.
I agree that women can be creepy as well. As for women being less likely to be a threat I think that can be valid but there's another reason less women are "creepy". Women are socialised to be better at reading body language and non-verbal cues.
Maybe this will finally be the end of the socialisation of women to believe that their love is the only thing that can "fix" a "damaged" man. Ergo, no more passing along of the jerk gene. Unless those jerk Republicans are successful in making abortion illeg ....oh! Ohhh!
Then mutton! Hmm, lamb saag might feature prominently in my weekend plans now...
Erm, however the persecuted religion is not generally persecuted when in a position of privilege. I would argue that the societal space for questioning religious beliefs is itself privileged. For many, many people their faith is a deep part of their identity.
*shudders* yes. Perhaps not now when hopefully everyone should have had a look at some rudimentary anatomy in biology class but there were several case studies in a textbooks I came across from the 1930's-1970's that made mention of it. It was attributed to the viginity myth - that men might mistake it when being told…
I've read far, far to many medical books when I was doing research on how women's sexual dysfunctions were understood and treated by the medical community. "if that's all you know how could you be disappointed" is so wrong and dangerous on many levels. One of the worst case scearios? More than one man mistaking the…
Maybe I understood this the wrong way but when the judge told her "you demonstrated great courage for a young woman" I thought that it demonstrated how little he expected of her. When I read down thread that she's in the foster care system etc it makes me wonder if she'd have been put in jail if she'd not shown up but…
I call it the thumper rule but I don't know if anyone else does :) I figure it's basically a more grown up and nuanced way of saying "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" which is how it was said in Bambi.
I must have misunderstood you because it sounds here like you're arguing that religious persecution is somehow not as important as other forms of oppression? If that's actually what you meant to argue, I'm sorry but that's incorrect. Oppression is full of intersectionalities for one and two just look around the world…
Just imagine queefing to the tune of Oh Canada :)
